The 2011 Directive on Patients’ Rights in
Cross-border Healthcare not only enables
patients to be reimbursed for treatment in
another EU Member State but also makes
it easier for patients to access information
on healthcare and thus increase their treatment options. The Directive became law in EU Member States in 2013 and emphasises
the value of eHealth and the importance of
interoperability in national health IT systems
in facilitating information sharing.
It is against this backdrop that, with the support of the EU Health Programme, the first
24 European Reference Networks started
their activities in 2017

Description
Issue 2018
The data collected address treatment provided with Prior Authorisation (PA) from the MS of
Affiliation (where the patient is insured); as well as treatment where such Prior Authorisation is not
required. This report provides an overview of the data on patient mobility in 2018, collected between
June and October 2019. Filled or partially filled questionnaires were received from twenty-nine of the
thirty countries contacted (being the EU-28 plus the EFTA countries Norway and Iceland), with only
Iceland unable to reply. As several Member States had difficulties in providing data on all the
questions asked, many provided only partially filled questionnaires, as a result the baseline numbers
referred to in different sections vary, and percentages should be interpreted with caution.

The importance of Professional Education in Emergency Medical Service

Description
Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is a critical component in the delivery of quality healthcare services. Being the first line of professionals to respond and evacuate patients to hospitals, paramedics play a major role in influencing the short term and long term health outcomes the clients with traumatic injuries. In this case, there is need to continuously empower paramedics them with up to date skills and knowledge, to enhance their competence in the profession, through continuous professional education and research in emergency medical services. However, lack of adequate repository of knowledge such as books and scholarly research studies in the field is a major hindrance. This study sought to examine the trend in EMS research, by investigating the scholarly research studies published in the filed in the last 10 years. An electronic search was conducted in the various databases to monitor the number of published scholarly research articles in 13 countries across the world. The study found that although there has been a gradual increase in the number of published research studies during the period of review, the number is so far below the required standards. This indicates low interest in continuous professional development of EMS through research, a situation that hinders delivery of improved services in the field. Also, it is shown the significant resource savings with no changes in clinical outcomes or patient, faculty, and house staff satisfaction through professional education.
